“No Country for Old Men” is a book recommendation I’ve received from my form teacher. My expectations related to this book were very high, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the story I was about to discover and for the subtle ideas that were about to finally make sense in my mind.
The book is of a serious kind, debating themes as drug deals, the dangers from the borders (the story talks about the borders between North America and Mexico) and the rotten unseen roots of everything. The manner of describing to the depth of the subject was surprising and unexpected. It gave me a total different view on what we see as perfection, an example, and what hides in plain sight.
Title: “No Country for Old Men”
Author: Cormac McCarthy
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Number of pages: 320
Recommended age: +17
Star Rating: 5/5 ⭐
Sneak peek
At the borders of North America with Mexico, Moss has the lack of luck to see the effects of an unsuccessful big drugs deal. He finds the bodies, the guns, the drugs and…the money. Moss takes the briefcase, the only thing that will make him run for his life and leave everything behind with no other choice.
He hides and fights like he learned to in the army, but how far will he get to run when Chigurh, the one without mercy or humanity, is technically watching his every move? In the end, what will the characters choose? Mercy or duty?

The characters
The characters are made to seem real. Their fear or…lack of emotion… is obvious and predictable. Nevertheless, it’s very well-thought to give the background of the characters, their connections little by little. The characters’ personality was predictable, while their actions were absolutely not. Moss was more scared for his wife than for himself, he was the definition of a crazy strong minded man. He fought with his last breath and was a generous person, helping the girl who was on her way to California. That, I think, was the moment when he met the female version of himself.
“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦.”

The action
The action is dark and deep. It is full of hidden senses and makes you ask yourself questions you wouldn’t normally ask. I consider it a book that makes you smarter, mature and objective in the way you see the world. I am still young and my vision upon the world is most of the time dreamy, hopeful.
Well, “No Country for Old Men” showed me that there are men who are proud to be part of a nation which, in the idea, is one of the greatest and do not care about the fact that maybe their financial possibilities never let them leave their home town or literally live, not just exist. Someone told me this sometime before and made me think about it. It’s about what’s inside not outside, not about the appearance of something, but the facts themselves. I find this book inspirational in a way I couldn’t even describe.
The action is narrated at the 3rd person, it’s a little bit difficult to follow the story line, but not impossible. It’s an underdog story and a challenging reading, but definitely a life changing one. This book speaks about facts of life, about the fact that there is “No Country for Old Men” after all. This story shows you the cruel reality, not every time the good guys are the ones who win. But the life somehow finds its way to balance the scale.
